Motel Rocks the Vintage look

As you work through the rails of humbug stripes, neon flashes and checkerboard prints it’s clear to see that UK fashion brand, Motel Rocks, has its finger firmly on the fashion pulse! Its A/W collection is so securely focused on the fashion present it brings examples of almost all the key couture catwalk trends for 2013. With nods to the mixed texturing and velvet we saw from PPQ, Mark Jacobs monochrome and Temperley style soft lace their A/W collection is very fashion forward…

Being so ‘on trend’, Motel Rocks may not be the first brand you consider when looking for Vintage style, but like so many of our favorite fashion finds – there’s so much more to them than meets the eye.

The brands vintage heritage is so deeply embedded, that is actually inspired the whole business. During a late 90’s American road trip (I know – very poetic) the founders developed their inspiration for the brand from the many thrift stores and second-had shops they visited. Re-working vintage garments and styles for the British market, the brand was born.

Suddenly, the 90’s theme for their A/W collection makes even more sense. Bold use of iconic 90’s imagery (peace signs and smiley faces printed on oversized jumpers) and Courtney Love style tea dresses styled with chunky boots, point to the brands vintage background an inspiration.

But the vintage influence doesn’t stop there.

Vintage Motel, their recycled clothing line, re-works pre-loved garments into brand new items. Expertly marrying vintage cuts and fabrics with current trends, the range gives you the chance to own a custom made one off item for between £20 and £40! It’s a refreshing approach from this vibrant brand, and it’s clear that everyone involved appreciates the sentiment behind the product as I’m told that the labels are sewn in by hand at the office!

Disposable fashion is an increasing problem. In an article for The Telegraph last year, Environment Correspondent Louise Grey reports that 500,000 tonnes of clothes are sent to landfill every year. With this worrying trend in mind, its great to know that there are young and affordable brands embracing a more sustainable approach.

Their Vintage Motel range is currently available as a concession from Top Shop Oxford Street, so if you’re a London based vintage devotee go and take a look. One thing is for sure…by snapping a piece of Vintage Motel ‘old’ fashion you’ll be certain to look ‘in’ fashion!
