Six rules to look Fluro-tastic!

Even the least diligent of fashion followers will not have failed to notice that 'fluro' is taking over the high street. Poised to be a key trend for the summer, this bold look will have some if us quite literally reaching for our sunglasses.

There's no doubt about it, for those of us over the age of 17 or without a GaGa esqu. trendsetting reputation, it's a tricky look to pull off. That's not to say many of us won't try. The result of such endeavours will no doubt add to that selection of photographs we force our friends to remove from face book and delete from all record.

So what do you do? Give your credit card to your mum, and go into into solitude for 6 months while it all blows over? The answer is no...fluro or neon can actually be a great look for everyone if you follow these 5 rules.

1. DON'T wear it from head to toe...
Unless your an incredibly trendy fashion blogger, a member of Little Mix or standing in for a defective lighthouse, top to toe fluro is never a good look. No one needs that much attention...

2. Body paint - just say no!
Unless you want to look like Rambo on acid just avoid it...

3. Invest in some key Fluro accessories
Fluro accessories are in abundance at the moment, with varying levels of..well... fluorescence! A neon handbag (like this fantastic example from The Cambridge Satchel Company) with a simple LBD will make your ensemble bang on trend without making you look like an extra from saved by the bell!

4. Body paint no...make-up YES!
Particularly lip stick or nail varnishes. Obviously you need to apply a little sense as well as your lippy, by selecting shades that will flatter at the same time. Matt neon pink lipstick is fabulous for providing an instantly updated look. Be a little more wild with your nails and try a neon yellow in homage to the spring sunshine. Two of my particular favourites are Immodest Lip Stick and Rare Varnish both by Illamasqua.

5. Mix your trends.
Look to the high street for your guidance on this, but Fluro looks great when worn with some of this seasons other key looks. Animal print and monochrome work particularly well. Try adding a neon skinny belt to a high waisted leopard print skirt or layer a casual white cardigan over a neon vest. I found one of my favourite examples on the Today I Want blog...

6. The golden rule...if it doesn't suit, don't buy it.
If your anything like me it's oh so easy to get seduced by promotional shots into buying something that doesn't suit my shape. Needless to say, when the garment actually glows, it's even more important that you avoid this pitfall. Confidence is always key, but delusion won't make you look any better than you do!

My take....

Feeling very relaxed after a long run on Saturday, and inspired by the glorious sunshine in London, I decided fluro was the way to go!

I layered my H & M neon jumper over a fuchsia long sleeve top with simple black leggings. New Nike Free's with neon orange laces finished the look...

Needless to say I was somewhat difficult to miss!
